Heartbeat

Heartbeat
Koro  Rex  says you can hear Tane Mahuta’s Heartbeat,
if you listen closely. I can’t hear it Kotiro said. Don’t worry Koro Rex said you’ll hear it some day.
The mayor wants to cut down the ngahere but some people disagree.
Rubbish! They say the mayors dad would never have let that happen. Save the Te Rakau!
People are unhappy so they make signs and Kotiro’s brother Wiremu stormed out of the house.
Koro and Kotiro stand and watch the mayors red  Ute drive off into the forest getting ready to cut down the trees.
It’s too late to ring them.
They are wiping tears off their faces.
Now they can see houses getting built on the space where the ngahere was.
The end . By Andre Ngapo.

  1. What images did the author give you through his deliberate choice of language? Why was it so important for Kotiro to hear the heartbeat of Tane Mahuta?
